The Magical World of Marionettes
You
might say that these marionettes are real, but not quite; they
are mostly the part of us we sometimes would like to have a
chance to be! Through them we can say things we’d like to say,
to express, to demonstrate!
The
use of puppets and marionettes has evolved over thousands of
years as an important cultural component for many races. Found
in ancient Egyptian and Native American artifacts as well as
other societies all around the world, they have been used as
message bearers, educators and entertainers. Today, they have
special significance in communicating and expressing issues
often very difficult in face-to-face conversation. As a result,
they are being used in therapy and communication with children
and adults alike; and in providing comfort to sick people,
especially at Christmas time.
These
marionettes are from Norma Jackson’s personal collection of over
three hundred. Each marionette was used in a performing
company that became known as “the only one of its kind in
Western Canada”. This company staged many large and
small productions, including Aladdin, Gilbert and Sullivan’s
H.M.S. Pinafore, Jack and the Beanstalk and Shoemaker and
the Elves. Of course, when the curtain rises, the marionettes
truly come to life creating a magical world between reality and
make believe. It is the equivalent of the human theatre only
in miniature including full sound and music, special effects,
lighting, and the odd walk about with the audience!
Today,
marionettes are respected as a true “art form” in most
countries around the world.
So, if there is a chance
for you to meet the “little people”…
